Now Go Home and Get Your Fucking Shinebox

This is probably the best scene from Goodfellas, which is really saying something. Scorcese has always been the master of choosing appropriate music for his movies, with The Departed and Casino being two shining examples, however he really knocked it out of the park with this one.

Coming in hot with “He’s Sure the Boy I Love”, the song does a right proper job framing the era in which the film takes place. The music is lowered a little bit as the altercation begins, until it is eventually cut to emphasize the discomfort of the situation. And then all of a sudden the weird intro from Donovan’s “Atlantis” begins and Tommy bursts through the door with a head full of steam. The scene climaxes, as does the music, with Robert De Niro kicking in Billy Batts’ face. Just stomping all over him.  One of the best movie scenes of all time, one of the best music selections for a movie scene of all time.
